Cupping is one of the oldest forms of therapy and has been part of the Finnish sauna tradition for centuries. It has traditionally been used to relieve a wide range of ailments.

People often seek out cupping because of muscle tension or various types of pain, but equally for its lightening and deeply relaxing effect. After the treatment, you may even feel a sense of euphoria, and the effects can last for up to 10 days.

How the Treatment Proceeds

The body is first warmed in the sauna, softening the skin and boosting circulation. Next, you move to the cupping table. The treatment always begins at the neck and shoulder area, which effectively opens up the body's flow. Between 10 and 25 suction cups are used, depending on need — on your first visit, we proceed gently and cautiously.

The surface of the skin is lightly and superficially broken using sterile instruments. The procedure doesn't hurt, though it may feel like a small pinch. The cups are then placed over the marks for around 10–15 minutes. Afterward, the body is rinsed, water is offered, and if you wish, you can enjoy some additional warmth in the sauna to finish.

Cupping is generally recommended twice a year, with a minimum interval of 3 months between sessions.

The treatment is not performed if you have:

  • fever, infection, or a contagious blood-borne disease

  • anemia, cancer, or are undergoing cancer treatment

  • severe diabetes, heart disease, or severe asthma

  • blood-thinning medication, or are pregnant

  • open wounds, widespread skin inflammation, or varicose veins in the treatment area

How to prepare for the treatment:

  • Eat a light meal beforehand – your body needs energy to recover

  • Drink plenty of water before and after the treatment

  • Set aside a calm period afterward – avoid the sauna, baths, and strenuous exercise for the rest of the day

The treatment takes place at Haapamäki Suoja, in the sauna section on the lower floor. Hygiene and safety are top priorities, and professional-grade equipment and cleaning products are used. Cupping is a complementary therapy and is not a substitute for medical treatment.
